Welcome and About Us

Introduction

Welcome to our Peak District Holiday Cottages Self Catering Accommodation

In autumn 2007, we discovered an escape from the city and a chance to offer a little bit of what we love - a great place to stay, a friendly, professional welcome and an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

Previously, we’d lived all our lives in North West London and ran a small business that grew to over 40 staff members. After a gap year travelling the world and a decision to sell the business, it was time for a change. We travelled to Leeds to take our son to university and stopped off in the Peak District on the way home. Waking up to stunning scenery and hills that rolled on for miles, we were instantly taken by the location. We thought “wow, where are we?  This is amazing."

At the time we had no plans to run a self-catering business, but were looking for an opportunity to take on a new challenge. In March 2007 we became the new occupants and owners of Wheeldon Trees Farm. New to the industry, our first self-catering guests arrived just three days later. We decided to allow the dust to settle and experience a summer season before making any changes to the business.

Six months into our ‘new job' we began the conversion to create wonderful holiday accommodation and provide our guests with a fantastic and sustainable tourism experience. We totally renovated the seven existing cottages, created a new unit, laundry facilities and a communal games/dining room.  We installed a ground-source heat pump to provide all our central heating and hot water. We introduced extensive recycling facilities for guests and green cone food waste digesters.

Our new cottage (Sheldon) is completely wheel-chair accessible which was an important consideration for us.  We had the impression that in the Peak District there were a lot of visitor attractions that were accessible to disabled people, but not a lot of places for them to stay. So despite the additional costs, we decided to provide facilities for them.

In April 2008, we re-opened, in effect, a new business and all the challenges that entails.  We’ve been absolutely delighted with the response we have received from our guests and their feedback continues to be invaluable in helping us to improve all aspects of our business.

We are fortunate in having a steady influx of guests year-round (which has been a bit of a surprise to us !).   During their stay, we encourage visitors to make maximum use of their legs and minimum use of their cars and it’s brilliant to see them enjoying the stunning surroundings and all the huge range of activities and sites the Peak District has to offer.

We look forward to welcoming you to Wheeldon Trees...
