Walk 4: High Peak Trail and The Royal Oak


A quiet back lane leads to The Royal Oak: country pub food at its very best. Walk off that dessert as you return along the High Peak Trail...

Time: 45 mins (shorter walk) - 1½ hours
Distance: 7 kms (4.5 miles)

  1. Walk down the drive past Sheldon Cottage
  2. At the end of the drive turn right and then follow the lane opposite heading uphill along the stone wall (a)
  3. Continue on this lane, passing Hurdlow Grange on the right and Hurdlow Hall Farm on the left, and Donald’s Farm (the one with all the abandoned farm equipment) on the right.
  4. The lane continues with a sharp bend to the right (b)
  5. [For the shorter walk, take the footpath indicated straight ahead at this point.
  6. Follow the path across the field to the raised railway embankment and take the steps over the wall to the right of the passageway (c) – turn left to join the High Peak Trail]
  7. Continue along the lane to its end – at the Royal Oak Pub (d)
  8. When suitably refreshed, follow the path down from the pub to the High Peak Trail and turn left
  9. Continue along the trail until your reach a sign and gate across the path – this is the northern end of the High Peak Trail (e)
  10. Turn left past the gate and follow this gravel path – initially with the quarry on your right
  11. At the end of the path, go through the gate and turn right on to the lane (f)
  12. Follow the lane back to Wheeldon Trees
